| Racing pigeons have bands on their legs to identify
them with a unique number and club membership. These circular
bands are placed around their leg within a week of hatching. |

A water source placed outside of the
loft to prevent contamination by bird droppings. Medications
can also be mixed into the water for ease of administration.
A healthly pigeon is a must if birds are to return home
after a long flight.

Unfortunately, pigeon droppings occur
and keeping the loft clean is a constant chore. Some
well designed lofts take cleaning into consideration
when making a loft. This loft has a screen floor and
droppings simply pass through to a removable floor for
easy of cleaning.

The floor slides out for easy cleaning
of bird droppings. Care must to taken not to breath
the dust of bird droppings as fungi can grow and may
be inhaled. In some cases, these fungi can pose a health
risk to individuals. Please see First
Aid and Health for more information.

Many fanciers favor the widowhood
racing system during the very competitive racing season.
In this method, males race while hens stay home to
await their mated partners. In the off season, some
lofts close the entrance to the nesting boxes that
is used for the widowhood system to prevent nesting.
