Barshoe Wow on cast off with Cesar in the background. Wow took 3rd in the Derby. He ran the course and covered the ground with ease. Cesar was the field Marshall and knew the grounds. With his efforts and directions, they kept the trail on course and on time.

American Field Trial
The following pictures are of Raymond R. Rucker Derby and the Amateur Colorado Shooting Dog Championship. During my visit at the West/West/Gibbons dog camp in Arnett, Oklahoma, I was fortunate to ride in the gallery of the derby and the amateur shooting dog championship. The dogs that compete in these American Field events are truly amazing animals. This is particularly true for the Colorado event. Weather conditions are usually warm. The grounds are enormous with a continuous course on wild quail. Dogs must endure running through shinnery (live oak brush) and motts (taller oak brush) that are thick and hard even for the horses to get through. Dogs must search and cover huge areas to be successful in finding wild birds.

Getting ready means preparing horses as well as dogs.

Windmills provide water vital for wildlife, cattle, and field trialers.

Women and men compete equally. Released brace of Pointers.

Just moments after the release. Handlers check their time.

Point! A Pointer standing just outside a large mott with the handler looking for birds to flush.

A point in open country with a back. The pointing dog is on the left with the dog backing on the right. Handler (left) is sending the dog on for relocation.
